My kindney cancer journey

I had a rare type of kidney cancer , can think of the name of it now ,

A couple of years ago I mentioned to my doctor during my anual asma medical that I just didn’t feel quite right and I had lost a bit of whieght , so after the routine test you’ll know the ones I mean , he said that the local hosital was doing a cancer screening for out patients and booked me in and after a good deal of proding ect ,she decided a scan would be a good idea , when I had the scan I was told the results would be back in around a fortnight his was a Thursday evening I got a call the following Tuesday can you come in Thursday afternoon to discuss your results , when she pulled up the scan the left Kidney was a prefectly clean shot but the right looked like a dirty hand print , and when she told me that it looked like there was a growth on my kidney , it was no surprise looking at that picture , any way had the kidney out about eighteen months now and all test have come back good , fingers crossed it stays that way , I should add that my elderest brother died from kidney failure back sixty od years ago and things where different then sadly I never really knew him

Hi @GrahamHPalmer, welcome to Kidney Community :purple_heart:

Thank you so much for sharing your story! It sounds like it was such a shock seeing those scan results, even when you could tell something wasn’t quite right.

It’s really positive to hear that your surgery went well and that your tests have all been coming back clear since…that must be a huge relief. Fingers crossed it continues that way for you :crossed_fingers:

It’s also really moving that you shared about your brother :purple_heart:

You’re very welcome here and I hope being part of the community helps you feel supported along the way.

I have had a similar experience to you in suddenly having a cancerous kidney removed. My remaining kidney is still healthy and I am at the moment just having 6 monthly scans.

I am really surprised how long it is taking to recover from the surgery. I am in medium level pain which is just annoying at times .

How long do most people have post operation pain for ?

Keep safe everyone.

My kidney removal was by the keyhole method, so my recovery was about 10 days. Best wishes B

My kidney was removed by key hole and I should have been out in a couple days but the after care staff complained that I wasn’t drinking enough water so I downed plenty and then when we had the tests to go my salt levels was to low so had to stay in until next day without drinking much , and felt pretty good so after a few week hanging around being as pain I decided that one of the kennel roofs could do with the leaves sweeping off , big mistake when I was standing on a metal section sweeping the last of the leaves over the side the beam holding the sheet of steel gave way and I went down the sheet like a slide . trouble is when I stopped I had managed to smash a vertibrea , now I do get pain in my back inline where the kindey used to be but my scans have all come back clear

You could’nt write that if you tried. My dog sleeps on my bed and just leaves enough room for me, much safer. Best wishes B
