Hi Paul, welcome to Kidney Community! There is some advice about Stage 3 here: Advice on Kidney disease stage 3 - Living with kidney disease / Recently diagnosed - Kidney Community

Hi my name is Derek and on 23rd June 2026, I had my cancerous right kidney removed. My left kidney is stage 3b. CKD. I am 75 years of age. My problem is with my diet, I am afraid to eat any food that is likely to damage my remaining kidney

My doctor has given me medication, for my anxiety but it is not helping. I spoke with a McMillan dietitian who gave me lists of foods I can eat. My problem is my head is telling me don’t eat it, it will harm your remaining kidney.

At this moment in time, I don’t have much quality of life

Hi everyone. I’m Neil from Edinburgh. Following surgery on a broken arm in 2023, I contracted eColi virus in hospital, which manifested in my kidneys and spine. I was an inpatient for 14 weeks as a result and am CKG stage 3, now aged 69.

The two areas which I’m finding hardest are in greatly reduced energy levels and my diet. All the “bad” foods seem to be my favourites! I seem to get conflicting feedback on things such as beetroot, lentils/pulses and so on.

I’m really looking for a forum to share experiences and ideas which may help.

Looking forward to sharing with you.

I keep busy I like to keep myself occupied. It does not seem that I will be able to have dialysis. I keep going lower and then creep up again.

Hi everyone. First time on here so if I make a mistake I am sorry.

I live in England West Midlands. I was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease last year called Fibrilliary Glomerulonephritis. My consultant had to send biopsies away ?? London for the diagnosis. Has anyone else on here suffered from same disease. I have been told because it is rare there is no treatment so no cure.

I am a retired nurse only because of ill health and so much missing my work

So much looking forward to hearing from you all

Welcome to Kidney Community Suzy! I’m sorry to hear you’re missing your work. Hopefully the forum can provide a small dose of the community feel I’m sure you’re missing :purple_heart:

Hi my name is Giles I am 59 and still in a bit of a shock at being diagnosed in June with CKD stage 3a , EGFR 53-56.

I only had blood tests for routine PSA and then they found high levels of protein in my pee. The summer has been a roller coaster of ups and downs mainly because although I think of myself as being very fit ( swimming and yoga) I am becoming increasingly knackered all the time and feel the cold like never before.

tBF the doctor has been great and has been testing me for everything as he thinks that at 3a the fatigue is not CKD. Does anyone else have this issue?

It has been great to read everyones post And I appreciate how much worse so many people have it and a big up to you all being so positive!

Thanks a lot

Giles

Hi, I am 2 years diagnosed CKD stage 3, unfortunately I received little dietary advice from nephrologist, discharged from clinic and transferred to GP care with 6 monthly urine and blood checks. Now stage 4 and have been advised to take statins, tried two types but have had bad reactions to both, has anyone had same problem, are statins safe to take with CKD?

Thank

Ela

Hello and welcome. I am stage 4 and am on Atorvastatin 10 mg one a day. When I raised the same question as you with my nephrologist he told me that the benefits far outweighed the downsides. So far so good Best wishes B

Thank you for reply. Atorvastatin 20 mg was first prescribed I was dizzy, headache and just wanted to sleep, stopped taking and was advised to halve to 10 mg but not much better, I wonder if I continued would the reaction go away?

Ela

Hello Ela. Sorry I cannot answer that as I have never had a problem with statins. I would think that the smaller dose might be worth a try. Have you thought of cutting the larger ones in half to see if that makes things better. Best wishes B

Hi Ela, welcome to Kidney Community! I can’t help with your statins issue other than to say it might be worth having a conversation with your pharmacist.

In terms of diet, we have some tips an information at the link below and it’s a good place to ask any specific questions you might have.

Hi I’m Freya 63, found out I have CKD over the telephone when ringing to check blood tests that the receptionist had said were ok, I thought I was low in iron no symptoms gym everyday and regularly run 8k a week then the doctor said oh yes and then there’s your CKD. Turns out it’s been on my past tests and no one thought to inform me. The nurse did say they don’t generally inform patients and for next blood test stay away from the gym for 48 hours and cut down on protein intake as these can screw markers. So annoyed no one thought to say anything I could have been following all the guidelines to aid diagnosis
