Newly diagnosed

Hello I’ve just joined this group because I have just been diagnosed with CKD 3a. I’ve had to send off for diet and information regarding this desease. I’m quite concerned that I’ve just been left to my own devices. I do have another blood test before the end of Feb. I know 3a can classed as quite mild but I don’t want to progress to 4/5 and am changing my diet already. I have high blood pressure for 25 years now and my mother had the same thing but I don’t want to progress down a slippery slope. Has anyone managed to slow the progression by diet and exercise?

Thanks

The correct diet avoiding too much potassium is paramount. Exercise is aways good. it will stop the decline being too rapid I suspect. I am stage 4.

I’m also new here, found out last week I may have stage 3A kidney problem which was interpretation written on the bottom of the lab form (results) following recent blood test. I’m in a bit of shock, denial, confusion and would think from this perspective I should be having a sit down conversation with my GP? I’m now waiting for appointment for kidney scan! Otherwise I’m researching CKD, similar to yourself I don’t feel I have had adequate medical input considering the seriousness of aiming to reduce any further kidney damage

Hello Jem, Fully understand your situation. Ther same happened to me regarding my GP. I had no help or assistance and the only response I ever get to my various test results is ‘abnormal, but expected’. Not very helpful. Much has been said on here about keeping potassium levels down and keeping well hydrated, diet sheets are on the web, and I take notice of those supplied by various NHS hospitals. Other suggestions, particularly those from American sources can be confusing and often contradictory, Basically avoid bananas, tomatoes, nuts , wholegrain breads and similar products, nuts and concentrated /high juice cordials. exercise and keep your chin up ! Best wishes B

I also am in the same situation. No one at the surgery had bothered to inform me about my ckd stage 3. The paramedic at the surgery found it in my notes whilst he was looking at my medications for extensive bruising! No information or help was given. I intend to see the GP next week if I can get an appointment! I need to know what I can and can’t eat. Whether I need to see a dietitian or need more medications. I also need to know whether I am stage 3a or 3b. Thank you for reading.

Hi Jo, Irrespective of your kidney stage, I would suggest tat you try to avoid high potassium foods, cut down on your dairy and salt intakes and keep yourself well hydrated. This will help and should slow down further deterioration. Find out from your doctor what action he recommends. Good luck. Best wishes B

Thank you for this information Beanbag . I’m hoping I can get a GP appointment next week.

I spoke to my GP today. Apparently I’ve had ckd since 2022. I’m stage 3a with 46% eGFR He wants to start me on medication, but I don’t know what it is until I pick up my prescription, hopefully tomorrow. I asked about being referred to both a renal specialist and a dietitian, but he said I don’t need to. I’m to more bloods taken for the kidneys and diabetes.

Good lucki with your appointment. Best wishes B

I was diagnosed with IC MPGN in November 2025 and had 13% kidney function. I was prescribed steroids and am now on an immunosuppressant but like you, felt completely lost when it came to what I should and shouldn’t eat. I found a good download from the Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust that has some good recipes and if I’m in doubt I search on my phone for the food or drink plus ckd and check the advice. Avoiding high potassium foods is Important. I cut down on salt, sugar and fatty foods and reduced protein, especially from red meat. With the help of the meds I now have a 54% kidney function and can stil eat well and enjoy tasty food. Hope this helps.

Hi Ive just been diagnosed with CKD 3b and waiting for the results of a CT scan last week. I have a cyst on my right kidney they want to investigate. So Im looking on here looking for advise re diet and if other meds I take are safe like omeprozole and to be part of a community that I talk to

Hello Maisie welcome to our forum. My nephrologist told me to avoid Bananas, Tomatoes ,Nuts and Dried fruit which are high in potassium, so generally cut down or cut out high potassium foods eg. Bovril and Marmite are ‘no goes’ as well. Reduce your intake of dairy products and keep yourself well hydrated by drinking 1 1/2 litres of fluid each day,Squash/cordial ,(not Ribena), is ok but avoid concentrated or high juice types. Good luck , Best wishes B

I am in the same position, discovered I had CKD stage 3 two weeks ago by finding it on my NHS app. It had been there since September and I didn’t know. Not happy that I could have been eating the right food for the past 8 months had I known, instead I’ve been eating bananas, tomatoes etc. I’m still not sure what I should be eating as finding conflicting info such as wholemeal bread or Sourdough? I read mention of kidney teams but I don’t have one. If I can find one, would a kidney dietician be a good idea? Or am I making it more complicated than it is? My main aim is not to get to stage 4. Can anyone point me to a good source of what to eat / not eat?

Many thanks, I appreciate any help. Still in shock finding I have a condition with no cure!
