If diabetes has been part of your kidney journey, what advice would you give to someone newly navigating both conditions?

Developed diabetes 6 tears after my transplant, keep the sugar intake down as much as possible to minimise the effects
Hi, I’ve had type 2 diabetes for about 25 years, but of course I could have had it for longer before being diagnosed. I never used to like to go to the Doctors. Last year I found out my kidneys were failing and was diagnosed with stage 3 CKD. My only advice to you is don’t be too hard on yourself it is not your fault. Follow a healthy diet of fruit, vegetables, protein food, whole meal bread, no sugar cereals, fish, especially sardines, mackerel, tuna, salmon, chicken, meats BUT limit the processed foods and have them as a treat. Don’t drink too much beer lager or cider. You can have it but look at it as a treat like birthday cakes. It you don’t buy it when out shopping then you can’t eat it. Good luck ![]()
