I’d love to hear from those who have experience of home haemodialysis.
How did you find the transition?
Did it change your quality of life?
Would you recommend it?
Has anyone chosen to return to in-centre care?
Honest stories — both positive and challenging — are so valuable
Hi @dawn.maclean23
We find HHD very worthwhile. Hubby was trained for home dialysis right at the very start of his kidneyless journey, despite his stage 4 terminal cancer diagnosis. (He had some immunotherapy sessions before Covid came along and put a stop to that but it has worked its magic nonetheless and here we are 7 years later)! HHD is much more flexible because we can dialyse later in the day/at the weekend if hubby has a hospital appointment or if we want to take a short break away from home. There are still occasions when he has to travel to the unit for dialysis - eg if his fistula needs to be retracked or I am out of commission due to my own cancer surgery or unable to carry out my nursey duties on crutches! He finds the travel to and from hospital tiresome when this happens BUT the unit staff are marvellous. We both had extensive training at home before we were allowed to fly solo and the nurses made sure we were fully confident and competent. Of course, there are occasions when we require assistance at home but our lovely HD team always come to the house as quickly as they can. We have managed to book holiday dialysis in a Hampshire unit a few times (we live in Scotland) and that gives me a real holiday to recharge my batteries. I hope my prattling answers some of your questions and I’m sure others will chip in with their own experiences too.

Hello! I’m on HHD and I use nxstage equipments. This is more portable machine so I’ve been able to visit family back in Scotland no problem. I do dialysis every 2 days which means I have little restrictions in terms or diet and fluid, and it keeps my bloods stable. There’s good contact with my nursing teams even if you’re at home. All in all I find it helps me just get on with life!
I did HD in unit for 6mths on twilight and although it was good, I prefer the independence of being at home. In the unit you are more subject to NHS schedules and I’d often hear my unit didn’t have the staff to maintain the twilight slot so I’d be moved timeslot or location (when you work full-time and dashing to treatments etc it’s not helpful!).
