Changed from peritoneal dialysis to haemodialysis

After suffering with a cough for three weeks I had a chest x-ray, which showed a pleural effusion of my right lung. Turns out it was possibly due to being on peritoneal dialysis. Spent 8 days in hospital, had the fluid (1 litre) drained, a tunnelled line fitted, and had my first haemodialysis session (2 hours). Got my next one on Tuesday for 2.5 hours.

Find it difficult to organise anything as I don’t know what my dialysis schedule will be, had no information about contact numbers, consultant I think is still the same one but will be a different contact number I am guessing. Feeling a bit lost after three years on peritoneal dialysis and having a proper schedule, etc.

Is this how it is at the beginning?

Wow, that is a big change indeed - both mentally sand physically.

I hope Tuesday’s session gives you some clarity and answers. In my experience, people who switch often go through a bit of a “grey area” while things are being put in place. In time, you’ll settle into a new routine… even if it looks different to peritoneal.

Please keep us posted on how you get on as I’m sure there are many others who are facing, of who have faced, the same switch.
