Dialysis takes up a lot of your time, whether you’re at home or at the hospital. What do you do to pass the time?

I haven’t stared yet, but I am planning on using the time for Home HD to study. I’m not going to commit to a full on course, but use the time to learn a language or study subjects I am interested in, so there’s no pressure if I can’t manage it sometimes. The last thing I intend to do whilst on dialysis is to sit watching tv or similar, so I plan to make the time a space for improvement and being positive rather than a negative section of my day

Is there a language at the top of your list to learn?

Possibly Spanish as I have a very basic on that, but I started Latin for fun during Covid, and surprisingly retained quite a bit of that, so may do that as well

But I’m focusing on philosophy as my main study plan, and if I can get into the rhythm of it, might do an online course to have something to show for it

I used to save up my favourite tv programmes to watch & I downloaded all the streaming apps on my phone/tablet. I watched a good variety of stuff from politics to history to easy to watch stuff for just pure entertainment when was feeling particularly low. I also took my crochet and did this while listening to audiobooks and music. The time was broken up by sandwiches, tea and biscuits from the staff which were much appreciated. I didn’t feel like doing much else really as although I was fairly healthy, my blood pressure was always high and I would get a lot of fatigue. I had a transplant 3 months ago and it sounds a bit silly but I kind of miss the routine of dialysis and the staff at the unit who were brilliant. I definitely don’t regret the transplant though!

I don’t think missing the staff and the routine is silly at all, both were a big part of your life. Glad to hear you got your transplant 💜

On HD (4 hrs) for two years now. Started out by over-organising my time : 30 mins printed newspaper and crosswords - 30 mins puzzle book - 30 mins emails - 30 mins Facebook - 60 mins Youtube, etc. Over time learned two things : (1) Don’t do anything that can be dropped - really annoying for everyone. (2) Allow time for snoozing.
